class="headline_area"> <h1>Greek Super League</h1></div><hr />The <strong>Greek Super League</strong> is one of the newer football leagues in Europe comes from the country of Greece. This league is currently the highest professional association football league in Greece. Founded on July 16th 2006 it currently is ranked 14th by its UEFA coefficient. This place gives the Greek Super League two Champions League qualifiers and three Europa League qualifiers. Since 1959 Alpha Ethniki had reigned as the highest in professional Greek football. The Greek Super League has its roots in the Alpha Ethniki, however is a completely different league. <h2 style="text-align: justify;">Greek Super League Structure</h2><div> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Currently there are sixteen clubs that compete in the Super League. The Greek system of football follows a similar to structure to leagues throughout Europe. The Beta Ethniki is the second league in Greek football and at the end of the season three teams are promoted from the Beta Ethniki with three teams being relegated from the Greek Super League. The season is composed of each of the sixteen teams playing a home and away series. The two teams that finish at the top both qualify for the UEFA Champions League with the top team entering directly into the third qualifying round. The teams that place second through fifth in the league enter a playoff for the second entry. The team that wins this playoff will enter the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Super League top three</h2><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Many of the teams in the current Greek Super League have a rich and storied past coming from there time in Alpha Ethniki. The league is currently and has been dominated by the big three: Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens.These three teams represent the bulk of the championships in the Greek Super League and the Alpha league. The continuously place one, two, three in the rankings and all three have played 50 seasons in the top division. This ranks all three at the top of the league with Panthessalonikios Athlitikos Omilos Konstantinoupoliton also having 50 season in the top league.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">Olympiacos</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Probably the most storied team of the league is the current champions, Olympiacos. Olympiacos Syndesmos Filathlon Pireos, or Olympiacos Club of Fans of Piraeus, was founded in 1925 and is the most successful football club in Greek history. The have won thirty six League titles and many other regional trophies. In addition to this they have reached the quarter finals in the UEFA Champions League as well as the UEFA Cup Winners Cup. They currently play at Karaiskakis Stadium which was originally built in 1895.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">Panathinaikos</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Panathinaikos was founded in 1908 and is the oldest members of the big three. They have won 19 Greek championship titles as well as many additional regional trophies. The team until 1979 was an amateur club and organization, however in that year it became a professional organization. There traditional home stadium is Athens Olympic Stadium, however they are currently planning the design of Panathinaikos Athens Arena which will be their new home for the 2010-2011 season. The team in recent years has suffered a severe down turn. This crisis has currently reached its peak as fans are currently dissatisfied with the direction and management of the club. Hopefully management can turn this around and recover and grow one of the most storied franchises not only in Greek football, but in all of the world.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">AEK FC</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The last team in the big three is AEK FC, or the Athletic Union of Constantinople. This team was formed by Greek refuges from Constantinople in Athens in 1924 and has gone on to be one of the most successful football with 28 national titles to their credit. They have been the champions of the top league in Greece 11 times and have continually provided top players to the Greek National Football Team. They have made it farther then any other Greek Football Club by reaching the semi finals of the UEFA Cup in 1977. This teams unique history has made for one of the more storied and celebrated teams in all of European football. Fans of this club are a lively bunch and enjoy a good game of football as much as anyone.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">As you can see the Greek Super League has many teams that have a rich history of quality football. While the Greek Super League probably will never be on the level of Spain, Italy and England, it does bring solid play that helps to round out the field for the Champions and Europa cup tournaments. These teams have a faithful following in Greece and regularly will fill 70,000 person stadiums. This is testament to the strength of Greek football and what it means to the people of this country. With a background going back more then a hundred years football is something that has been a part of Greece for a long time and will continue to be so. Association football is the most popular sport in the country and the Turkcell Super Lig has been gaining a solid reputation steadily since it was founded. The league began from fairly humble beginnings but now the top two squads can qualify for the champions league entering in the third and second rounds respectively. The league is set up very similar to all of the other leagues in Europe in that each teams place the others in the league twice, once at home and once away. There are 18 teams in the league and 34 matches in a season with the bottom three teams being relegated to the TFF First league at the end of the season. Three teams are then promoted from the lower league into the Turkcell Super Lig. The thing that stands out most about the Super Lig is how it has been able to grow steadily into the force that it is today. <br /><h2 style="text-align: justify;">Turkish Turkcell Super Lig, On the Rise</h2><div></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The league began in 1959 as an attempt to unite the fragmented national leagues around Turkey. Today it is a blossoming league with over 50 million pound being spent on new players last year. The reason for this has been several fold, but perhaps the biggest reason has been the new television contracts and sponsorships. In 2005 it was announced that Turkcell had signed on for a five year sponsorship. This sponsorship brought in a significant amount of money to all of the teams within the league. There had been attempts for many years to land a sponsor for the league but none of them worked out. Once Turkcell stepped up to the plate though the league had a legitimate big time sponsor. With this sponsorship it is predicted that the Super Lig will continue to grow and bring in some of the worlds top talent.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Currently the Super Lig places 11th in the UEFA coefficient rankings, but has risen from 14th the previous season. They sit poised to crack into the top ten and with the continued increase in attendance this may become a reality sooner as opposed to later. A lot of this will depend on the success of the top teams in the Super Lig. Many of these teams have a rich tradition of competitive play, however taking it up a level may not be something they are capable of. The fans of the league may beg to differ with that opinion as many of the teams play to full sized stadiums completely sold out on a regular basis.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">Fanerbache</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">One of the teams that will have to carry the torch if the Turkcell Super Lig expects to become one of the top leagues in Europe is Fanerbache. Fenerbahce or the Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü commonly known as Fener is probably the most decorated team in the super league. It was founded in 1907 and plays out of the Kadikoy district in Istanbul Turkey derives their name from a famous lighthouse there. They currently play at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium which has a current capacity of 52,056. The stadium was renovated in 2006 to become on of the finest facilities in the world and will host the 2009 UEFA Cup final. This stadium is s shining example of what it will take to bring the top league in Turkey to the level of some of the other leagues throughout Europe. Fener has won the Turkish league 17 times and has a host of other minor international and national trophies. This team, with their massive stadium and recent success, is going to be one of the teams that needs to be at the forefront to make the Turkish Super Lig into something special.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">Galatasaray</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Another team that also needs to be successful for the league to succeed is Galatasaray. This team is also based out of Istanbul is is the most successful team in all of Turkish football. This success has extended somewhat beyond the borders of Turkey and they continue to be on the rise. Founded in 1905 they are tied with Fener with 17 Super League Championships. However, in addition to that Galatasaray has made a strong showing in many of the tournaments around Europe. This includes making it to the European Cup semi finals once and quarter finals three times. In addition they have captured both the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. They were also the first team from Turkey to participate in the Champions League and have been in the league the most times with 10.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For the Turkcell Super Lig to have success internationally both of these teams are going to need to continue to attract start players and increase revenue. When these two teams succeed it benefits Turkish football as a whole and will help to keep the UEFA coefficient on the rise. The older Scottish Football League has been in existence since 1890 and has had a host of different divisions and teams. Clubs were frequently promoted and demoted at the end of the season. In the mid 70s the Scottish Football league set up a structure of three divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, and the Second Division. The configuration stayed in place until 1994 when the Third Division was added. In 1998 the clubs in the Premier Division decided to follow the successful example of the English Premier League and form their own wholly separate league. As with the English Premier League, the motivating factor for this decision was money. League sponsorship money was evenly dived amongst all leagues in the Scottish Football league, something the top teams in the SFL did not agree with. It was decided that the top 10 teams from the Premier Division in the SFL would break off and form the Scottish Premier League. These original 10 teams were enlarged to 12, the current number of clubs, in the 2000/01 season. </div><h2 style="text-align: justify;">Scottish Premier League Format</h2><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The promotion and demotion from the Scottish Football League to the Scottish Premier remained the same as it was between all divisions before the creation of the SPL. The 12th, or last, placed team in the premier league would be demoted to the Scottish First Division and replaced by the top finishing team from that league. This system had been in place for over a hundred years and worked well, although there were a few loopholes that some teams attempted to exploit. In 2003 Falkirk’s promotion was blocked thereby sparing Motherwell from being relegated. The same situation again occurred in 2004, however the league decided to alter the rules for promotion and relegation so that they were applied more fairly.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">In its inception the league was sponsored by the Bank of Scotland, however that relationship was not renewed at the end of the 06/07 season. Instead, Clydesdale Bank took over sponsorship of the league and will do so at least through July of 2011.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The twelve teams in the league are required to play each other three times during the season. This can be either twice at home or twice away, but not three of either. Each teem is awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw with no points being awarded for a loss. At the end of the 33 games the teams are ranked by points, then goal differential, then goal for. The teams are then split into a top six and bottom six where each club will play a further five matches against those divisional opponents. After this is completed the bottom club is sent down to the Scottish First Division if the top team from that division meets the league’s qualifications for entry.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">This basic structure and format forms the foundation of most of the principles within the league. Clubs compete hard not only for recognition within the league, but also to get a coveted spot within the UEFA champions league. Since the league was formed in 1998 it has slowly gained strength within UEFA rising from being ranked 26th during the inaugural season all the way to 10th as of 2008. Currently this means that two teams from the Scottish Premier League will qualify for the UEFA Champions League (usually those that finish first and second) as well as two for the UEFA Europa League (generally the 3rd and 4th placed teams). In addition if a team wins the Scottish Cup, the oldest national trophy in the world, and they have not made it into either league by their ranking they will be allowed to compete in the UEFA Europa League as a fifth team from the Scottish Premier and possibly Football leagues.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><h2 style="text-align: justify;">‘The Old Firm’ dominance</h2><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Since it began in 1998 only two teams have won the championship of the Scottish Premier League – Celtic and the Rangers. This long standing rivalry is referred to as the Old Firm and has its origins in a match from 1888. Between these two clubs 66 Scottish Cups and 93 Scottish League championships have been won. This rivalry is steeped in history and tradition with sectarianism being a primary focal point. The teams’ supporters and management have tried to move away from this relationship but old traditions die hard. Celtic is often backed traditionally by Irish Catholics and Irish Catholic supporters. The Rangers traditionally have been supported by the Protestant Loyalist community. This heated relationship has taken the rivalry of these two teams to a whole higher level. Recently however many have attempted to end the bigotry and hatred on both sides of the rivalry. Regardless of this, the two teams continue to dominate the Scottish Premier League and have some of the best football matches you will ever see. Passionate fans and play are the hallmarks of these competitions. The overall head to head record of matches between Celtic and the Rangers is very close, with a slight edge going to the Rangers. A total of all Scottish League, Scottish Cup, and League Cup matches gives a total of 152 wins for the Rangers, 137 wins for Celtic, with 92 draws. The German Bundesliga 1 is one the top football leagues in the world with many of the best teams and players coming from there. Originally founded in 1963 the league has grown steadily since then and has undergone many changes to keep up with the growth. The second tier came into play in 1974 and both it and Bundesliga 1 are professional football leagues. In order to be a team in the German Bundesliga a club must meet certain requirements that are set down by the league. While there are many things that are the same about the German Bundesliga 1 and other top fight European leagues, there are other things that are substantially different.<h2>History of Bundesliga</h2>In order to fully understand why the German Bundesliga is the way it is one needs to examine the full history of association football in Germany. There has been a long history with amateur level teams playing in a variety of different sub regional leagues until around 1945. In 1900 the Deutscher Fussball Bund was founded with eighty six member clubs. The DFB continues to exist today as a federation of regional associations. This federation also allowed teams from outside Germany to participate as long as the players on the team were German. This practice was stopped as of 1904 however and only German based teams were allowed in the league. This did however set some kind of precedence for participation by teams from Austria.<br />The top trophy in German football from 1903 to 1944 was the Victoria Championship Trophy. This trophy was originally to be offered to both rugby and football teams; however football became the much more popular sport and eventually was the only one to receive the award. The trophy was awarding was interrupted by World War I and World War II. After World War II it was lost and did not resurface until decades later in a safe where it was placed by a fan for safekeeping. In its place the Championship Plate was created and awarded since 1949.<br />By 1919 there were over 150,000 registered football players in Germany. This number surged to over a million by 1939. These players were primarily amateur and formed the basis for regional and local sports associations around Germany. Around this time the totalitarian Nazi regime began its rise to power. Like everything in Germany, the Nazi party sought to control the entirety of German football. The formerly independent sports associations were forced into a Nazi party run league. In addition most of the teams also participated in the purge of the Jews from their organizations. There were some notable exceptions to this as both Alemannia Aachen and Bayern Munich tried to support their Jewish members against these actions. All of the regional teams were reorganized into sixteen regions and played in the Gauliga. This actually was a good thing for German football as prior to this was really no top league and most teams were allowed to compete against each other. By the forming of a more organized national league the level of competition was seriously increased. This would mark the beginning of the formation of what would eventually become the German Bundesliga.<br />Initially after World War II all sports clubs and associations were banned. This however was lifted quickly in the American, British, and French zones. As the old trophies and leagues were reformed there became a larger desire to form a more centralized professional league. This became even more intense as other leagues in competing European countries began to draw off Germany’s best players. In East Germany the DS Oberliga was formed in 1949 and continued until the unification of Germany in the 1990s.<br />This however was still not enough to compete with the rest of the world. A humiliating defeat to Yugoslavia in the 1962 World Cup was seen as the spark that finally drove Germany to create a professional top flight league. This new league would be partnered after the successful top league in England and would begin play in the 1963-64 season. Originally 46 clubs applied to be a part of the new league and eventually 16 were selected. The sixteen teams completed the first season with FC Koln being crowned the first champions of the new German Bundesliga.<br /><h3>Bundesliga 1</h3>The champion of the German Bundesliga is decided by play in the league. The set up for play is the same as in the English Premier League with each team playing each other twice, once at home and once away. Originally a win was worth two points and tie worth one point, but the league has adopted a method where a win is now worth three points. The club with the most points at the end of the season becomes the champion. The top two placing teams in the German Bundesliga will qualify for the UEFA Champions League into the group phase. The third place team will enter in the third qualifying round.<br /><h3>Bundesliga 2</h3>Since the addition of the second league there has been in place a system place for relegation and promotion between the leagues. The current system calls for the two teams in the first league to be relegated and the top two teams to be promoted. In addition as of the 2008-09 season the sixteenth placed team in the German Bundesliga will play the 3rd place team in the second league for the final spot in the First German Bundesliga.<br />As you can see the German top flight league took a bit longer to evolve then many of the other Premier Leagues in Europe. This was caused by many different factors starting with Germany’s dedication to amateur football followed by the difficult period of World War II and the resulting aftermath.
